Arturia BeatStep Pro Controller/Sequencer by Alex from WMDevices visiting Sonic Sense to share his initial thoughts. As a performer, he shows us how the BeatStep Pro will help him in live applications.

He gives us and overview of:
    — Control and sequencing of modular synth gear
    — Ease of use (start making music within hours)
    — Connecting with Analog Synth Gear
    — Integrating a computer (optional)
    — Three sequences, one for drums and two others
    — Assigning to pads and triggering in real time
    — Benefits of using a sequencer
    — MIDI and CV Control

Hi, my name is Alex and I work for a company called WMD. We make modular synthesizers and guitar effects pedals here in Denver, Colorado. I am I here with my friends at Sonic Sense and today we’re taking a look at the Arturia BeatStep Pro. So, the Arturia BeatStep pro is a stand-alone sequencer with the ability to do up to three separate sequences. You have a drum sequence and two separate sequences for controlling pitch, gate, and velocity over external synthesizers or your computer.

Today, I have to BeatStep Pro controlling the WMD SSF Monolith modular synthesizer as well as an array of drum modules The BeatStep Pro is controlling the pitch and envelope of the Monolith synthesizer and the keyboard of the synth is completely arbitrary. We’re using the Arturia for all the sequencing within this synthesizer. We also have the gate outputs of the BeatStep Pro going into the trigger inputs of each one of these different drum modules.

I’ve already created the beat via step sequencing and playing live but I’m just going to kind of show you some things you can do with it real quick. Right away, you can just play your drum modules via the pads. This is an interface that just hasn’t really been dove into as far as modular synthesizers. Some people are doing some pretty cool trigger outs but as far as assigning it to pads and being able to loop in real time, this is one of the only things I know will do it. So, you can also go into step sequencing mode so when you’re playing it goes up to 64 step-sequences so you have a lotta variety in your sequences. So, that’s pretty cool.

The gate output is controlling the envelope on the Monolith which is in control of a filter and a VCA. So, that’s letting the actual signal of the oscillator come through and then the pitch output is controlling my 1 volt per octave inputs on my oscillators and so that’s creating our kinda acid sounding baseline as well as I have the velocity output going into the fold CV input of the wave folder module in the Monolith.

The wave folder’s a kinda subtle effect but it adds more harmonics and grind to the overall sound. This is what that sounds like…

That’s with my filter all the way open. You can hear that on certain steps the wave folder is kinda opening and closing. I’ll mute the drums so you can just hear the bassline.

And you can hear that the envelope of the gate output on sixteenth notes is controlling the cut off my filter. So if we go to another sequence, you can kind of hear that that’s what’s creating our rhythm, that’s all created with in the BeatStep.

We are also using the BeatStep Pro to control plugin on our laptop. We’re using the Arturia Arp 2600 in their V collection software. Also, with very convenient mute buttons, I can kind of mix live and on the fly which parts I wanna have in an out. So now, we’ll bring the drums in.

And now, my other sequence. Now this leaves our hands free, using a sequencer leaves our hands free to control different parameters on our synths and just kinda bring the performance to life. You can also switch between sequences easily using these arrow buttons.

So I’ve had my hands on the BeatStep Pro for less than 24 hours and I can just tell you it’s very intuitive. The manual is pretty easy to understand and I was making all this within just a few hours. It’s pretty plug and play and I really dig that. There’s also a bunch of features that I didn’t even get into and I just haven’t even had the time to explore including this roller and looper section and the randomness and probability line. Those seem like really cool to add some variations into your music and into your beats and everything that you’re doing without having to do it by hand.

Another thing you can do, is use in control mode, the entire, this entire section of the BeatStep is now a MIDI controller so you can map any of the pads or knobs to anything inside your software so not only can you control all this hardware and sequence your laptop live or any other MIDI gear that accepts CV, you can also control parameters over your MIDI gear and your software in real time. So that’s also really exciting.

So, thanks for checking out this video. I definitely plan on picking up an Arturia BeatStep Pro. I hope you I’d do the same.

Be sure to check out SonicSense.com and Arturia.com for all the latest news on the BeatStep Pro, and we’ll see you next time.
